Below is a list of BWA members who tutor in areas across the UK, plus one school in Austria and woodcarving holidays/tuition in Greece.

For the novice wishing to take up carving, some tuition with a professional can be invaluable. Learning the correct techniques will quickly enable the novice to produce beautiful and fulfilling carvings. It can also be a cost cutting exercise as advice will be given regarding tools, timber and equipment, saving you the cost of buying unnecessary or unsuitable tools, or failing through using unsuitable timber. Intermediate carvers can also benefit greatly by improving their technique and artistry.

"Carvers don't make mistakes - they make adjustments", and the best people to tell you how, are listed below.

Ernest Riall, PhD at Wooburn Craft School, Town Lane, Wooburn Town, Bucks, HP10 0PJ - There are two approaches to the wood carving course. For the complete novice, there is a step by step program which includes a series of talks and demonstrations followed by a couple of simple exercises designed to teach the student how to best approach woodcarving. The talks and demonstrations include identifying and discussing the use of the different types of chisels and mallets, different woods, the different approaches to holding the object to be carved, and how to best sharpen your chisel. Included in these discussions will be practical information on the different ways to buy a complete set of carving chisels without having to take out a second mortgage! The two exercises are designed to maximise the learning by the new student teaching them how to read the grain, about carving different kinds of woods, and how to translate a natural object into a created shape. The second approach is for more experienced carvers. In this approach, the student decides what they want to carve, and the instructor will work with them from the design, planning, selection of the wood, the carving to the final object and finishing the carving. All tools will be made available and some of the expense of the wood for most projects will be covered. Tools are available for you to use until you wish to buy your own. New terms are starting throughout the year - visit our website for the latest schedule - or write us at

John White Woodcarving Wirral Having always been drawn to the warm beauty of wood and it’s unique nature, I have been carving for nearly 30 years taught by local master craftsmen and work in all disciplines. My great great grandfather was a journeyman woodcarver who moved to Liverpool from Padstow in the 1800’s, I had no idea he was a wood carver when I took it up. Like the carvers of old I have learned to be flexible in my approach and will carve just about anything.

I offer friendly and relaxed courses for students at all levels: beginners to advanced, on the Wirral, in Cheshire, and in Scotland, privately and for local colleges.

Gerald Adams Woodcarving Gerald Started his woodcarving business in 1986, carving parts for local furniture makers, and quickly established a reputation for fine wood carving of the highest order.

His customer base expanded, completing commissions from around the world, with patrons from Royalty to the film industry. With his artistic background, BA (hons)in fine art, he has designed and carved some prestigious Church work, including Screens at Felmingham and East Raynham.

Being accepted as member of the Master Carvers Association in 2001was a highlight of a rewarding career.

Gerald taught in Adult education in the late 90s and gained a Certificate in Education.

He now teaches weekly sessions at his workshop in Long Stratton Norfolk and is really enjoying passing on some of the skills he has gained in nearly 30 years of professional carving.

The sessions are informal and fun, mostly booked up, Gerald is considering putting on more sessions and possibly an evening class.

As well as these short 2/12 hour classes, Gerald teaches two day beginners classes, which have proved very popular, to have a go and master the basic techniques and finish a simple project. Many students carry on with their own carvings and if there is space join the weekly sessions or attend the regular Saturday classes.

These courses are ideal for Christmas / Birthday presents for someone to start or expand a new hobby or career. Email or phone Gerald on 01508 532111
